Call to Action – STEM Project

Several NASA retirees, Rita Willcoxon, Roselle Hanson, Maria Lopez-Tellado, Ruth Gardner, and Angie Brewer have started a STEM mentoring program in Brevard County. The name of the program is Launch STEM Careers. The program is focused on girls in grades 4- 8 in primarily Title I Schools, schools with high percentage of low-income families. The purpose of the program is to engage the girls in project-like hands on activities to give them a better understanding of Science Technology, Engineering and Math career fields and to show them how much fun it can be to work in these fields. The type of activities include building and launching foam rockets, and much more.

Below is the integrated schedule for all the schools from January through May. As the program is growing there is a need for more volunteer mentors, women or men. Although the program is for girls we have had men mentors that really enjoy the program. We typically need 10 volunteers for each visit to schools. The time commitment for each visit is about 3 hours on Wednesdays, school early release day. You will be provided a lesson plan prior to the school visit. You read the lesson plan and attend the 2- hour event with the girls. All supplies are provided. You just show up and have fun with the girls.
